Driekop - June-July 2006

Just after Dy and I were married we found ourselves a job with a small geological consulting company called GeoActiv, based in Joburg. They sent us to a tiny place called Driekop, near Steelpoort in Mpumalanga. We were working on the Bushveld Lyered Igneous Complex, which is a pretty amazing geological occurrence. It is composed of layer(s) of chromitite that can be followed for about 700km. It is full of platinum, and owned mainly by Angloplats.
We were living in a small house on the mine that has been closed for about 10 years. Luckily we had our animals there, and they loved it. The crazy cat virtually lived on the hill behind the house, while the dog loved coming to work with us. The whole area was very pretty, and the hills around us were absolutely amazing.

There was thousands and thousands of meters of core to be logged:

The deposit has been studied so much, as it so academially important, we knew exactly what we were going to find, and where. I just had to look at it and get the exact distances. Boring, but definately worth the experience.
